Sania Mirza, the teenage sensation from Hyderabad has shot to fame and success in a very short time. In February 2005, The 22-year-old tennis player became the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title defeating Alyona Bondarenko of Ukraine in the Hyderabad Open Finals. Sania Mirza has been honoured with the Arjuna award by the Indian government for the year 2004. She is also known as the fashion icon in Indian sports.
According to you what is fashion: for me, it's not about being fashionable; it's more about being well turned out and comfortable. Like any 21-year-old, I like clothes and shoes! I do splurge on these. But my style, understandably so, is sportier rather than feminine.
What's your beauty routine: I am very conscious about what I eat. I prefer not to have oily food on a regular basis and try to include lots of fruits and salads in my diet. My daily exercise is a must and it's quite strenuous. It does help me in de-stressing. Water is a must and I drink plenty of it during the day. Since I stay out in the sun most of the time I use a sunscreen regularly to protect my skin.
What makeup are you most comfortable in: I use very basic makeup. A subtle blush, a kajal pencil, compact powder, and a gloss usually complete my makeup bag. I can't stand a caked up feeling so for me it's mostly light and natural.
Sports and glamour have become synonymous…
How do you maintain your glam look? Glam doll? Who me? Seriously, I don't think I have ever been glamorous or tried to project that image. I don't make any special effort to look that part. I like to dress well and keep fit, if that reflects my personality and gives the image of a glamorous person, then that's my mantra!
How does it feel to be a sporty fashion icon: I look at myself as just a sports person and definitely not as a fashion icon. And there is no effort from my side to be one either. While playing games, I don't focus on the fashion aspect but the comfort factor.
How do you keep fit? Tennis is a very physical sport and you can't survive if you aren't fit. I workout in the gym when I am not playing tournaments. I do weights and endurance training. It is extremely important to eat right in order to stay fit.
Your de-stress mantra: exercising, playing tennis, spending time with my family, Bollywood movies, music and of course watching oodles of TV.
Your most comfortable attire: Casual wear which fits me well. Trackpants, skirts and t-shirts are my favourite outfits.
Homebody or party girl… which defines you better? A homebody! I enjoy staying at home, spending time with my family. Going to a mall to catch a Bollywood flick with friends and family.
