Ghatothkach is the animated story of a boy with special magical powers. He is joined by an extremely cute baby elephant, Gajju, as his sidekick in all of Gattu’s mischievous endeavours. Through his adventures, Gattu lands up in Dwarkapuri, the land of Lord Krishna. And it is at this point that a children’s animated film becomes a love story. The film moves towards the love blossoming between Arjun's son Abhimanyu and Balram's daughter Surekha. Their marriage is fixed for when they both become adults.
But once Abhimanyu and Surekha become adults fate has something else in store for them. This is the period when the Pandavas are defeated by the Kauravas and now Surekha's parents no longer want their daughter to get married to Abhimanyu. This is where Ghatothkach comes to the lovers’ rescue and in his own special way tries to reunite them. Does it work… well you’ll have to see the film for that.
So is it worth a dekho?
The film isn’t bad but does leave a lot to say in terms in terms of editing and screenplay. Way too much time is spent on other things but in the climax when Ghatothkach tries to re-unite Surekha and Abhimanyu. Also the film ends all of a sudden without actually leading to a proper end – the end just arrives. Credit should be given to the animators for doing a decent job but some parts of the film could have been cleaner.
All in all the film is a fun watch but please remember just because it’s animated it isn’t a kiddies film – and there’s an animated lip lock to prove that!
