When you walk into a film that’s a Dharma Production and is being directed by someone who has been an AD to Karan Johar for years, you expect the best but you don’t want to see another KJo film. And thankfully Dostana does just that – it gives you the glam quotient you associate with Karan and all his films but it also gives you the edgy and hatke thinking of a new director on the circuit.
The film set in gorgeous Miami revolves around nurse Sameer (Abhishek Bachchan) and hotshot photographer Kunal (John Abraham). Coincidentally the two are on the look out for an apartment and land at the same house at the same time. But the landlady refuses to take two hot macho men into her home that also houses her niece Neha (Priyanka Chopra). So to ensure that they get the place they pretend to be gay.
In walks Neha who is sexy, young and beautiful. Soon enough the three of them are inseparable and become the best pals ever. Neha is one of the boys and the boys, according to her, are one of the girls! And just when you think this is one happy and gay friendship, things begin to heat up in Miami – and no we aren’t talking about the weather.
Sameer and Kunal both realize that they have feelings for Neha and each of them wants her to himself. Both the boys try to outdo and outwit one another ending into a big fight. However, Neha takes the fight as a lovers’ tiff! Now just when the two are about to spill the beans, in walks Abhimanyu Singh (Bobby Deol) – Neha’s new boss. Abhimanyu maybe Neha’s boss but all his affections for her are more than boss-like. Neha too begins to like him. This obviously poses a problem for our two loverboys – Sameer and Kunal- who now hatch a plan to get rid of Abhimanyu from Neha’s life by hook or by crook.
Playing all sorts of pranks they do get rid of Abhimanyu but also lose their best mate Neha in the bargain. The big question is will they be able to get their desi girl back? That’s what Dostana is all about!
So is it worth a trek to your theatre?
Absolutely and unequivocally yes! Tarun has delivered a simply love story to simply lovely story with an absolutely funny and have-you-constantly- in-splits script. John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan, both of who badly needed a hit, will get immense boost from their performances. For all the times John gives us a peak of his new and yummy body, it’s enough to keep all the women going back for more! Priyanka Chopra sets the screen on fire. Controlled and perfect acting couples with Manish Malhotra’s magic in costumes, Piggy Chops leaves you spellbound.

And it’s not just the main leads who leave you smiling from ear to ear. Watch out for Boman Irani who gives you such a cute performance. The entire theatre was in splits throughout his presence! Kirron Kher as the typical Punjabi mom obsessed with her son is superb. The scene where she finds out her son Sameer is gay is hilarious. You actually want to pause and rewind and watch it all over again! Sushmita Mukherjee, as Priyanka's aunt, does her part well.
All in all Tarun Mansukhani has made sure that people will sit up and take notice of him. It’s definitely going to be a busy busy year ahead for the little man because if his first film is this good… imagine what else he can deliver! The man is definitely here to stay!
