Movie Review: The President is Coming

Comedy Arrives Finally!

Rating: 3.5/5

Cast: Konkona Sen Sharma, Ira Dubey, Vivek Gomber, Satchit Puranik, Namit Das, Anand Tiwari, Shernaz Patel, Shivani Tanksale

Director: Kunaal Roy Kapoor

In 2006, George Bush, the President of The United States, visited India. Apart from very busy diplomatic engagements, he wanted to do one unique thing - shake hands with one young Indian under the age of 30. The President had read that India and China were the future of the world and over 600 million Indians were under 30. He wanted to touch the future.

The US Consulate hires a PR agency that "knows America" to find that young Indian. Zenith Public Relations run by the eccentric Samantha Patel (Shernaz Patel) and her sane assistant Ritu Johnson (Shivani Tanksale) , goes around India and finds 6 of young India's best.

They are Kapil Dev (Anand Tiwari) who wants to become India’s youngest and richest stock broker. And he is ready to do anything for that – even bribe the President! Next in line is Ramesh S (Namit Das) a software guru with Microsoft who likes the ladies and picks up dating tips from Cosmopolitan magazine. That he is gay and has a boyfriend is a tiny fact that Ramesh has kept hidden from everyone.

Next is Rohit (Vivek Gomber) who prefers being called Tom and is India's Best Accent Trainer. Insists he's "from there." Maya Roy (Konkona Sen Sharma) is India's best young novelist. She has decided that she deserves to win this competition and will leave no stone unturned to get there. Archana Kapoor (Ira Dubey) is the fifth contestant who brings in the good looks and the big money. She is a billionaire's daughter and India's leading lipstick maker.

Completing this group is Ajay Karlekar (Satchit Puranekar) who is a Social Worker. He hates English and says he only became a good speaker to compete with English speakers.

All six of them are collected in the basement of the US Consulate where they have to go thorough a series of activities and competitions to reach the final winner. And while they compete with one another numerous secrets about them will also be revealed. So who will win and will the right person win is what the story is all about.

The President is Coming is a hilarious film that will leave you in splits. Thankfully its only 90 minutes and therefore you don’t get bored or tired. You are engrossed all through the film and not for a minute do you find any one hamming or over acting. Konkona Sen Sharma is brilliant as you would expect. But it’s not just her. Anand Tiwari is simply perfect too as is Vivek Gomber. There are quite a few surprises in the film and each of the actors pulls it off with perfect ease. Shernaz Patel and Shivani Tanksale are equally good too.

At the end of the day The President is Coming is a film that I would definitely recommend seeing. It will give you the perfect laughter dose to deal with the city’s current mood!
