Romeo is a small cute dog who has been abandoned by his master’s family as they all move to London. So over night the super spoilt dog goes from living it up in a mansion to now living on the streets like other ‘average’ stray dogs. That’s where Romeo learns the rule of the street. His first encounter is with 4 stray dogs – well actually 3 dogs and 1 cat who thinks she is a dog!
Using his charm and quick wit, Romeo suddenly goes from being bullied by these 4 who rule the area to being their best mate. The five of them set up Romeo’s salon where the all the dogs turn up to be groomed and get a new hair cut by the suave Romeo. However as news of their success spreads, the local God father of all the strays, Charlie Anna sends his men to find out what is happening and why he hasn’t received his hafta of bones from them.
Romeo who is new at this game says he will have nothing of it and refuses to part with any of his money – in this case bones! As a result all his friends land in trouble with Charlie Anna till Romeo once again comes to save the day.
But just as Romeo is getting used to the ways of the area, he meets Laila. Laila is the hottest dog in the area and every guy present wants her. But Charlie Anna loves Laila and so no one dares to go near her. Of course no one other than Romeo. And when Anna hears of Romeo and Laila’s love affair he is ready to skin him alive.
Will Laila and Romeo stay together? How will Romeo convince Charlie Anna to not kill him? That’s what the rest of Roadside Romeo is all about…
Coming to the voices behind the characters because they truly are the reason why the film will work. Saif Ali Khan fits Romeo’s character to the hilt. He does a great job. But an even better job is by Jaaved who has you cracking up in your seat at every sentence and action of his. He has lent his voice in such a brilliant manner that you almost want to step into the screen and hug him although he is supposed to be this scary godfather type of character. Then another group of people who have been equally lovely in the film are Vrajesh, Tannaz, Suresh, Kiku and Sanjai who play Guru, Interval, Mini, Hero English and Chhainu respectively. Tannaz and Suresh stand out of all. However, Kareena disappointed. Her voice pretty much sounded the same in all her lines and that was a big let down to a character that could have been really played well.
Roadside Romeo brings to India all the animation and special effects that you normally associate with films in the West. And I think that’s the Walt Disney mark on the project. Having said that no credit can be taken away from the team in India – Tata Elxsi – for their fantastic work with the animation.
One thing is for sure that while it maybe a film that might be enjoyed by some adults but Roadside Romeo will be loved by the kids.
