Luck By Chance is set in Bollywood. It revolves around the lives of two struggling actors Sona (Konkona Sen Sharma) and Vikram (Farhan Akhtar). When Vikram arrives in Mumbai, he is amongst the thousands of other strugglers who are hoping to get that one break in Bollywood. Sona, originally from Kanpur, has been struggling for the past three years. She has been hanging by the side of a producer (Alyy Khan) in the hope that one day he will give her the parallel lead in his film as promised.
Also in Bollywood is the famous producer Rommy Rolly (Rishi Kapoor) whose wife is Pinky (Juhi Chawla). His younger brother (Sanjay) didn’t make it as an actor and is now turning director. Now Rolly only works with the superstar Zaffar Khan (Hrithik Roshan). But in certain chain of events, Zaffar backs out of the film and Vikram steps in opposite Nikki Khurana (Isha Shravani) – the daughter of the 70s superstar Neena Khurana.
The film releases and Vikram becomes an over night sensation. But in this ride from struggler to superstar, Vikram stands to lose and gain in equal proportion. The question is in this world of make-believe will he able to capture his reality. Will he be able to create his own kismet and destiny or will he make his own luck? That’s what Luck By Chance is all about.
In terms of acting Farhan Akhtar is brilliant. After pulling off the rock star image in Rock On, Farhan carries the lover boy image equally well. His understated style and magnetism will hold the viewer from start to finish. Konkona has done a great job too. However, I feel she should have been given more screen space as you often forget about her amongst all the rest until she surfaces again.
Isha does a good job in playing the spoilt star kid and as far as senior stars – Dimple, Juhi and Rishi – are concerned, they bring a whole different charm to the screen. Rishi Kapoor is simply adorable and Juhi pulls off her act with ease. Dimple Kapadia as the pushy Neena is fantastic and leaves you wondering why you don’t see a lot more of her. She is definitely one of the actresses who should consider a full fledged comeback in Bollywood soon!
Hrithik Roshan as well as the numerous other special appearances by Aamir Khan, John Abraham, Abhishek Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna, Vivek Oberoi and SRK all add to the charm of the film.
What works for Luck by Chance is the fact that Zoya hasn’t shown anything new but she has executed it with such precision and attention to detail that you almost find yourself as a member of her line up and not just a viewer in a theatre hall.
